I Need This Like I Need To Get Punched In The Face (April 2008)

"The Human Body: Pushing the Limits of Strength" on Discovery Channel (March 2008)

Now THIS is what I’ve been talking about! It’s not magic, we’re just capable of so much more. “We only use a third of our muscle strength.”

If you want to be inspired to do more, to be more, watch this.

Okay, maybe I’m overselling it – or maybe I’ve just been inspired by this show. But to think of how much more we can do, how much potential we have to unlock…

There are a bunch of things that come to mind. Forgive me for waxing philosophical.

People do what they want to do, not what they say they want to do.Read more

Blog Problems

Hey Guys! Been having technical difficulties, but I think it's all sorted out now. If you missed having these blogs, thank you. Much more to come...

Hitting The Wall (March 2008)

When you eat a meal, that fat is stored in your liver for quick release of glucose. It’s like your immediate fuel tank.

When your body runs out of it, you “hit the wall.”

That’s when you reach “exhaustion” and “can’t go on.” Now, those are just words. It’s not actually true.Read more

Belting

“There are two types of people, those who like to be super prepared and make sure they know everything for the test, and those like me who just throw themselves in and see where they’re at.”

I quickly admitted that I was the first type.

It’s no big secret that I’m a bit of a control freak, but I got to thinking about what “control freak” really means. In this case, the controlling part was trying to control the outcome. Maybe I was (am) a control freak because I didn’t want to fail. Fear of failure = control freak.

And as I took that in, perhaps the very moment I responded to the two types proposition, I realized I was going to see how the other half lives. I was going to throw myself in without a net.Read more

Balance

The best way to sound really smart is to begin with a definition.

Balance - the power or ability to decide an outcome by throwing one's strength, influence, support, or the like, to one side or the other.

Whether we're finding our balance, losing our balance, keeping our balance or taking someone else's balance... the "ability to decide an outcome" somehow feels just slightly beyond our ability.

And yet, with all of our inbalances, we push on. Maybe it's the genetic code inside of us that tells us to push on. Or some primordial instinct that gives us strength despite ourselves. Or maybe... just maybe, deep down, we know that we do have the strength and the power. It just takes a while to admit it to ourselves - because then we're responsible for our own outcomes.Read more

It's Chinese for "Stress"

The closest Chinese equivalent to the word “stress” is written as two characters. Roughly translated, “Crisis,” but the first character actually represents Danger and the second, Opportunity.

I had to take a hiatus from Kung Fu. I was somewhere between Danger and Opportunity.Read more

A Rant About Meditation, Science and Stuff... with a Good Ending

I’d like to talk about Chi and positive thinking.

Just kidding. I don’t care about positive thinking, because nothing good ever is gonna happen anyway.

See how I did that?

When I first started meditating at White Tiger, I was really happy to just clear my head. People seem to think of meditation as some hippy weirdo sort of thing, but look at it as simply stealing away some time to just... be. To clear your head and breath and not think about stuff in your life, to just sit there in the moment and all you do is breath and be alive and maybe relax your muscles and just be. I mean, really, that in itself is irrefutable no matter who you are or what you believe.Read more

Brown Belt! JC Penny!

Seriously though, folks...

My utmost respect to the Jou Gou's for their belt testing this last weekend.

If you knew what they went through, you'd run to the dojo to train under them. You should be doing that anyway, but you'd REALLY appreciate their dedication. These guys are no joke!

And especially, a heartfelt bow to the floor to Sean, White Tiger Kung Fu blackbelt.

You are a model of discipline, courage and above all, class.

Read the Tat story, see the pictures!

For all of you who need visual aid, you can see the pictures that accompany this story of Inked whoa... by going to:
