Brown Belt! JC Penny!

Seriously though, folks...

My utmost respect to the Jou Gou's for their belt testing this last weekend.

If you knew what they went through, you'd run to the dojo to train under them. You should be doing that anyway, but you'd REALLY appreciate their dedication. These guys are no joke!

And especially, a heartfelt bow to the floor to Sean, White Tiger Kung Fu blackbelt.

You are a model of discipline, courage and above all, class.

Read the Tat story, see the pictures!

For all of you who need visual aid, you can see the pictures that accompany this story of Inked whoa... by going to:

Then, use the link to "kung fu" blog to give this site, your beloved White Tiger Kung Fu School, more hits.

Thanks.

A CHINESE PROVERB on "Money"

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY A HOUSE

BUT NOT A HOME

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY A CLOCK

BUT NOT TIME

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY A BED

BUT NOT SLEEP

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY A BOOK

BUT NOT KNOWLEDGE

WITH MONEY YOU CAN SEE A DOCTOR

BUT NOT GOOD HEALTH

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY A POSITION

BUT NOT RESPECT

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY BLOOD

BUT NOT LIFE

WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY SEX

BUT NOT LOVE

The Last Dragon

December 5th, 2006   My punkrock sister and brother-in-law took me to a tattoo convention a few years back. It was exactly what you would expect, but out of the ink-stained sea arose a bamboo platform where a Japanese master artist inked a client – tap tap tapping a needle-pointed bamboo shoot into his skin. A huge crowd engulfed the platform in a sea of Rockabillies, Motorcycle ZZTop’ers, Gamers, Skaters, Stoners, Rockers, Gangsters... and one whiteboy from the valley with a dream of a Kung Fu marking...Read more

"South Park" has nothing to do with Kung Fu, but this is about "South Park"

Television’s not brain surgery. Maybe some would argue, but I say it’s art. I grew up watching TV and being affected by it. I’ve often been in situations and thought back to a show that affected my decision. Writing’s not fighting in a war, but every generation certainly has its brave artists, ones who are put on blacklists, who are exiled from their countries, whose books are burned. Those artists raise the bar if not the conscience, and they push the limits thereby getting people to think. For instance, the 1970’s had “All In The Family” and my generation has “South Park.” Read more

"So, where do you see yourself in five years." A very special job interview.

First off, sorry for the “Rice” blog. I just went back and read it. Wow.

I went in for a job interview yesterday and, in talking about the learning curve and such, I said this:

“...it’s like this black eye I have – because I study Kung Fu. It was a price I paid to learn a valuable lesson. And really, I got a great deal – because this black eye is gonna go away. What I learned is invaluable...”

And then I was asked about what I did for fun:

“Like I said, I study Kung Fu. I really love it. I mean, first, it’s a great stress relief. It’s also a great work out – I quit my gym membership and just go here now..."Read more

Fight Science

The National Geographic channel aired a show last night, August 20th, called "Fight Science."

This is a MUST SEE. And not in the way that I said “The Bachelor, Part 3” was a must see.

They built a dojo/laboratory to test speed, compression, accuracy, etc, using top martial artists in Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Kwon Do, Boxing and other forms. They went over all types of strikes and weapons.

For a skeptic like me who needs physical proof of things, the applied science of data collection made me love and respect Kung Fu that much more.

A kung fu punch, by the way, was scientifically proven to strike FOUR TIMES FASTER THAN A SNAKE! Clocked at 27 miles per hour.Read more

Rice

I've been harping on the idea of success and what makes a successful person… I think it stemmed from when I got sick this last month, because I was burning the candle at both ends - as they say - and then took a dive. I started looking into the difference between being active and being productive. If you go to Tijuana and get pain pills that make you hallucinate, you'll find that there is no difference. You'll also find God in a grain of rice… at the end of your coffee table.

If nothing else, the moral of this story is don't clean. Especially if you're gonna get sick.

This is where the Tijuana specials kick in, but our Fu has the "rice pattern" drill. Coincidence? And if you think of the forward movement as you, the other directions equal seven. The seventh letter is G, for God. God is all around you... moving forward. God... in rice. As long as you move forward... And take pain killers from Tijuana.Read more

Why do we study Martial Arts?

Your brain tells you it’s so you know how to fight and defend yourself.  Your pride or ego would like to believe that maybe, just maybe, if you had to you could get into the ring in a mixed martial art UFC match and GET IT ON!  But what does fighting for the sake of fighting prove?  Or answer?  If two equally matched and skilled opponents go at it in the ring or on the street the better man on that day will prevail.  So again, what does that prove?  So what if on that day you gave someone a beating.  What positive energy generating result came out of that?  None, just an inflated sense of self.  The vast majority of grandmasters and fighting champions all have one characteristic in common, humbleness.  This leads me to believe it’s got to be deeper than having an iron body and being able to knock someone out.   Read more

A test where you don't leave with antibiotics and cream

I just tested for a Blue belt… and I had a few cathartic realizations. Of which, these are not: A) Wow, it’s hot in Los Angeles right now. B) Polyester does NOT breathe. C) Water is a privilege, not a right. D) Sweat is only sexy for the first hour. The actual realizations were these: For as much as I’m suffering right now, it will soon be over and forgotten; what will NOT be forgotten, however, are the accomplishments and rewards that result. This, of course, goes for anything in life (which is what makes it cathartic and not just a thought). Frederick Douglas was right when he said “Without struggle, there cannot be progress.”Read more
